After more than 10 years, Lord Finesse kicks out the next installment of The SP 1200 Project. Sounds & Frequencies in Technicolor is the third release in the series that showcases that 90’s Golder Era hip hop. As you guessed it, the SP 1200 is the source of the sound and this producer knows exactly how to bring his decades of production experience to bare. The SP1200 is a legendary tool in the arsenal of any beat maker and Lord Finesse easily demonstrates his mastery of the MIDI controller. The quality work from Finesse here should come as no surprise. He has worked with numerous top notch creators over decades like Big L, Dr. Dre, Fat Joe, and B.I.G. And on this next release, it follows the same format as the previous episodes where vocals are absent. What isn’t missing on these 17 tracks is the high level of production where the beats take center stage. The style is crisp, layered with funk, soul, and boom bap. For this one, this D.I.T.C. founding member went “digging in the crates” once again and pulled out some real gems. It includes samples you may recognize. Others you may not that are previously unreleased and “were intended for the likes of Big L and Grand Puba, among others, but they instead found a home in his digital stashāuntil now.” It is good to hear that Finesse still has a great ear to modernize these old school sounding tracks. He has created another work of art that will stand the test of time as a demonstration to what instrumental hip hop is all about.
