Thievery Corporation – Versions (Eighteenth Street Lounge Music)

As the name implies, Versions is a musical journey into the mixing abilities of this fabulous duo. Versions also proves to be a physical journey to the musical varieties of the world. Thievery Corporation have once again pulled together a collection of eclectic artists for this release. But in comparison to some earlier works like DJ Kicks or The Outernational Sound, Versions takes the original tracks and enhances them with much needed electronic overlays.

The first stop on this world tour is India as Ustad Sultan Khan’s Tarana proves to be a relaxing downtempo track filled with powerful vocals and music of this master. Later, Herb Albert’s Lemon Tree transports you across the Pacific to a discotec in Oaxaca as the trumpets from some mariachi band fill the room. Originality departs the mainland and captures the sounds of reggae from the neighboring caribbean region. Even a reworking of The Doors is no challenge for these two as they bring the sounds of this 70’s group more up to date. Thievery are always capable of finding infectioius grooves for their numerous compilations. On Versions, they have thoughtfully sampled sounds from around the world and have done each track justice with their mixing abilities.
